He played Jake Murray in the series Accused (2010–2012). īrodie-Sangster also grew in popularity for starring in critically acclaimed cult films such as Death of a Superhero (2011), Bright Star (2009), and as Paul McCartney in Nowhere Boy (2009). He is known for playing Sam in Love Actually (2003), Simon in Nanny McPhee (2005), Ferb in Phineas and Ferb (2007–2015), Jojen Reed in Game of Thrones (2013–2014), Newt in the Maze Runner film series (2014–2018), and Benny Watts in the Netflix miniseries The Queen's Gambit (2020), for which he was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie. This eventually kills him, and forces him to live through his worst nightmare.Thomas Brodie-Sangster (born ), also credited as Thomas Sangster, is an English actor. Thomas also became his best friend.ģ) Contracting the Flare. This was the first real change in Newt's life, and it was when he found out about the world that had been erased from his mind (although he still recalled no personal details). He knows nothing about his family, his past, or even his true name.Ģ) Meeting Thomas and escaping the Maze. His life before that was erased and he has no memories before waking up in the Box. He's willing to work hard to do what's needed.ġ) Ending up in the Maze.Honestly, he's a little afraid of girls - of letting anyone get close enough to hurt him.His sexuality is ace/demi, but the small amount of sexual attraction he has is heterosexual. He's never had a girlfriend or even a girl he was interested in.He was part of the 'control' group in the experiment, meaning he wasn't immune.Becoming a crank is kind of Newt's worst nightmare. He doesn't remember her, but he had a sister before. He doesn't know this, and he doesn't know his real name. Newt was named after Sir Isaac Newton. It isn't something he's proud of, but he just couldn't do it anymore. Newt's limp was self-inflicted - the result of a suicide attempt in the Maze when he was a runner. He is also suffering the primary symptoms of the disease - he has far more of a temper than he used to have, as the flare has started attacking those parts of his brain. At his canon point, Newt is trying to come to terms with his inevitably horrible death and is dealing with the trauma of being a eighteen year old kid having to face his own mortality. As an intelligent and controlled young man, what could be worse than losing his mind, and becoming a monster like the Cranks? It's pretty much his biggest nightmare and there's no avoiding it - there is no cure for the Flare. When Newt discovers in The Death Cure that he is not immune to the Flare, he falls into a deep depression. This is not something he's proud of, or something he divulges easily, and even Thomas doesn't find out about it until Newt's tightly regulated emotions are altered by the progression of the Flare. In fact, it was those emotions that led him to a suicide attempt when he was a Runner that caused him to have a permanent limp. Obviously, becoming like the Cranks is one of his greatest nightmares. He believes that it's through order that they managed to keep things sane in the Glade. To him, order is the most important thing in the Glade, and in life in general. Newt is a very controlled young man, who isn't particularly comfortable showing his emotions and prefers to present a calm and even demeanor to the world. He's very much an introvert, not sharing his feelings easily. He has moments where he needs quiet, and moments where he likes to be alone. He's more serious than a lot of the boys in the Glade, and Thomas occasionally comments on how he's rarely seen to laugh. In The Scorch Trials, it's revealed that Newt was cast as "The Glue", meaning he's the one who holds the Gladers together. He takes the time to think things through and doesn't make rash decisions. Still, in the end he can be counted on to do the right thing. He's fair, dedicated, honest and intelligent, if not always particularly brave. Pushed into a position of authority after Alby was stung by a Griever, Newt took up the reins admirably. He's been through too much and seen too many of his friends die awful deaths to act like a child any longer, despite his age. Newt, although young, doesn't act like it.
